 Summary:
Although often criticized for being almost meaningless and without unique features, contemporary architecture paradoxically found itself facing the challenge to create urban diversity. Only contemporary design that implies certain distinctive qualities seems to be able to correspond to such a purpose. Rotterdam in the Netherlands represents an example of how contemporary, innovative design can be used as a powerful tool for establishing recognizable urban identity, even within delicate European cityscape.
